David Mann ”Helmet Protest” 16” x 20” Matted Motorcycle Biker Art #9601ezrxmb

“Helmet Protest”

Civil disobedience is live and well in David’s portrayal of three bikers’ responses to mandatory state helmet laws. The Easyriders Freedom F.I.G.H.T. organization pursued legal action in support of freedom of choice, seeing very clearly that today’s precedent for helmet laws could well be tomorrow’s precedent for even more oppressive mandatory legislation.

The wide glide, springer and FL front ends symbolically represent the range of riders and their freedom of customizing choice. That freedom is most surely not limited to a bike’s style; freedom of how to ride is equally cherished by the builder and the rider.

When the government began withholding highway support funds to states that did not enact helmet laws, the notion of being held hostage did not sit well with bikers from coast to coast. And as many politicians quickly learned, taking away a biker’s freedom of choice might very well result in a united community ready to exercise their right to another freedom: the freedom to vote.
