“Hellhounds On My Trail”
Like most bikers, Dave loves dogs… well, most of the time, anyway. Love has its limits, though, and the biker at the center of this lively scene has just about run out f patience with Man’s Best Friend. Among those touchstone experiences shared by all riders – dropping the bike, forgetting to open the gas petcock, and so forth – is running afoul of a bunch of damned dogs. They seem harmless enough at first, looking bored and drowsy while sprawled in someone’s front yard. But watch the transformation as they detect the sound of a bike heading their way – suddenly even the tiniest Chihuahua turns into Cujo, barking furiously and charging directly at the moving motorcycle.
Under the electrifying stimulus of a rolling target, even the fattest Fido seems capable of running alongside a scoot going 25 miles per hour, without once looking where he’s going or missing a single opportunity to nip at the rider’s ankles. Many a biker, infuriated by the pooches’ persistence, has made the mistake of kicking at his tormentors, only to close to losing control and joining them on the street.
An unusual contrast to the canine conflict depicted in this centerspread is the rich Currier and Ives quality of the setting. Dave painted a classic fall day – the bare trees, the round wet from the autumn rain, and game birds taking flight from a field in the background. Also unusual is Dave’s choosing to show the rider astride a 45 flathead, a bike he admires greatly, but rarely paints.
