Bob Chantland’s 1957 Triumph TRW fresh out of the crate

We’ve all daydreamed of it, finding an antique bike safely tucked away in a warehouse or a barn. Unmolested by inquisitive children or damaging rodents, its chrome and paint still shine after you carefully wipe away 40-odd years of dust. All original parts still intact, and what’s this?…the original owner’s manual neatly stored under the seat. Why stop the daydream here? Let’s take it a step further. Our fantasy machine is found in the factory shipping container. Its serial number and delivery destination is stenciled on the pine boards that encase our treasure. All miscellaneous parts are properly wrapped in paper coated with cosmoline patiently waiting for the local dealer to prep the machine for service…

This story “Still in the Crate” is available in this issue of The Antique Motorcycle (Click on the picture to Buy It Now).

1925 Motorcycling: Eddie Mitchell’s Economy Run – 14,740 mile motorcycle run

“Late in 1997 I received “The Coloradoan newspaper’s 1998 calendar which celebrated the 125th Anniversary of the “Coloradoan” and Fort Collins, Colorado. The cover was a collage of the photos within. To my surprise and pleasure one was of Eddie Mitchell – Eddie the Globe Trotter – and his 1925 Indian Prince motorcycle. As I searched through to find the photo, I had no idea where this one seeminly inconsequential action would lead. The photo showed Eddie, aged 23, astride his motorcycle and Hugh Lloyd, the Fort Collins Indian dealer, standing alongside. Eddie was finishing the final leg of a 14,740 mile motorcycle ride begun Saturday, June 13, 1925 which had taken him from New York to Florida, California, Washington, and into Colorado before heading back to New York. He would skirt the entire United States in 147 days…”
